Gardening at Play to Learn

November 14, 2021 By Teacher

As it’s getting hotter, this indicates that we are coming closer to our summer season. It is around that time of the year where we start doing our gardening and planting of flowers and vegetables. Here at Play to Learn one of our whaanau gave us the lettuce seedlings and we planted these in the box. After planting the lettuce seedlings, we watered the garden using the watering can. All we needed to do was to wait for the seedlings to grow bigger. Well done, tamariki ma!!

Lettuce is the quintessential salad crop and can be grown by anyone. Even if you don’t have a garden or much space, a kitchen bucket or Flexi-tub is big enough to produce a plant or two.

Lettuces come in a wide range of colours, shapes, sizes and types, and sometimes the most challenging part of growing them is deciding which ones to plant.

Lettuces require full sun, plant them in soil that is rich in compost and make sure the soil drains quickly as they dislike having wet feet for any length of time. ~ Lettuce Growing Guide
