At Play to Learn, we go to the library once a month, each month we choose a different day so all the children have the opportunity to go. Children/Tamariki learn how to keep themselves safe by holding hands and checking for cars/vehicles to keep themselves safe before crossing the road. They also love singing songs while on a trip.
There are many benefits to going to the library. Reading is very beneficial to children. Research suggests that introducing children to the library at a very early age is a way to help them develop communication and reasoning skills that they will use later in their life. Reading books is also one way to foster or extend their interest and gain more information.
Our children/tamariki are given the opportunity to return the books they borrowed. They particularly love dropping the book through the special window to return books. They also love standing by their teacher, holding the library card, meeting the librarian and getting the books out. Each child is given the opportunity to choose books that they want to borrow.
Simply visiting the library can be a wonderful experience. It is a way to introduce your child to the world of literature and reading.
